Catching a glimpse of the northern lights is something on everyone’s bucket list. Let us explain why.
Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis is a natural phenomenon that usually occur near the north pole (although it can be observed near the south pole too). It is a phenomenon which occurs when the earth's magnetic field interacts with the charged particles from the sun. Scientifically speaking, Auroras are produced when the sun's charged particles hit the earth's atmosphere, causing the atoms to move to a higher energy state. Light is produced when these electrons fall back to a lower energy state. (In other words - Magic!)Yes, science can be sexy too!
We backpack northern lights –we backpack to Finland, Norway and Iceland.
Finland is one of the most budget friendly places when it comes to chasing the northern lights plus you get to experience a lot of fun winter activities like snowmobiling, husky ride, visiting Santa’s hometown, and our favourite – ice floating (you may even get to the lights!). Backpack to Finland, visit Lapland and Helsinki with us.
Due to its exceptional location, Norway is definitely one of the best places to witness this phenomenon. Picture backpacking across a country where you can experience the history of Vikings, experience the famous Fjords and of course the beautiful Norwegian landscapes! Iceland is an adventure set in stunning scenery. It's the power of Icelandic nature to turn the prosaic into the extraordinary. A dip in a pool becomes a soak in a geothermal lagoon; a casual stroll can transform into a trek across a glittering glacier; and a quiet night of camping may mean front-row seats to the aurora borealis’ curtains of fire.
